Rest in peace, Major

Today, family and friends (and Gov. Tim Pawlenty) gathered to remember and pay their respects to 34-year-old Maj. Michael Freyholz of Hines.

While there were more than several touching moments during the funeral and burial, I found the flyover by this C-17 to be particularly moving. The flyover was provided by Freyholtz’s own 249th Airlift Squadron from the Alaska Air National Guard.

I was not able to run these photos in Sunday’s Pioneer, so I decided to share them here.

Rest in peace, Major.

  1. As a loadmaster from the 249th Airlift Squadron, and the loadmaster on the C-17 that performed the flyover, I want to give my thanks to the people of Bemidji and surrounding area for their hospitality. After the service, we landed at Bemidji Airport for fuel, and to pick up our squadron members who attended the service. The outpouring of people to came to see us, and offer words of support and condolences was greatly appreciated, and commented on by every member of the crew. I personally have not been anywhere with more friendly people than the greater Bemidji area.

  2. The Pioneer amd American coverage of this tragic accident was done in great style.
I want to thank you for your professionalism in a very trying time for his family.

    Thank you

    Harvey and Mary Freyholtz
