Hello readers, this is John Hageman the (fairly) new city reporter at the Pioneer. I’ve been here since August, keeping tabs on what’s happening in city hall.
I’ll post a bit more about myself later, but until then, here’s the city council’s agenda for the Monday work session. They’ll be meeting with local legislators (I’m assuming Sen. Tom Saxhaug and Rep. John Persell) about a possible fire district in the Bemidji area.
The funding mechanism for this new entity would likely be a fee based on a building’s value, which would apply to non-taxable properties as well. That’s an important point, because as I wrote earlier (http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/content/tax-exempt-property-bemidji-causes-budgeting-issues) Bemidji has a lot of tax-exempt property. That funding source would likely need legislative approval.
Officials from the city and surrounding townships have been meeting for a couple years to discuss a fire protection district.
There’s a lot of good background in this packet: http://bit.ly/SQyTTM
